Appointments asAssistant Professor will be made on a three-year fixed-term basis,with the possibility of renewal and with consideration for tenurebefore the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract.The School of Chinese is initiating an ambitious, large-scaleacademic expansion aimed at recruiting scholars of thehighest-calibre who are characterised by an international outlookand whose research commands a global or globally rising reputation.The School aims to fill several professoriate positions fromSeptember 2021 onwards at the ranks of Professor and AssociateProfessor with direct tenure and tenure-track Assistant Professoracross the areas of Classical and Modern Chinese Literature,Chinese History (pre-Modern), and Chinese-English Translation .While the School has some needed areas of coverage, the mostimportant hiring criteria are research excellence and outstandinginternational reputation. We are also open to hiring new colleaguesin clusters from the same university. We anticipate that the newhires we make will have an agenda-setting impact on the School, inthe region, and globally for the next generation.Applicants should be active, internationally recognised researchersin their field. In addition to possessing a substantialtrack-record of scholarly publications, applicants must be able todemonstrate active projects that promise ongoing intellectualimpact and innovation. Successful candidates will also be able todemonstrate an ability and willingness to participate in andsupport the School’s vibrant research culture. Appointees at therank of Professor should be internationally recognised leaders intheir field and be willing to provide academic leadership relevantto the School’s operation and strategic development.With a distinguished tradition of excellence in Chinese Studies, the School values a strong commitment to innovative and inspiringpedagogical practice . Primary teaching responsibilities will be atthe undergraduate level, with opportunities to supervise researchpostgraduate students. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% ofgross income. The appointments will attract a contract-end gratuityand University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme,totaling up to 15% of basic salary.
