Michael Funston’s cross into the box was blocked by the arm of Evan Osam and the referee had no hesitation but to point to the spot.Kevin McHugh neatly tucked away his penalty and that was enough to give Ollie Horgan’s side a superb victory that they thoroughly deserved. Harps dominated the opening period and created a host of chances.However, the feeling around Finn Park at half-time was that they might live to regret them.As it transpired they didn’t and McHugh’s goal was enough to give them all three points. Nathan Boyle had a glorious opportunity to extend the lead but he squandered his chance.Shelbourne pressed hard in search of an equalizer but it never came and the defeat severely dents their play-off hopes.They’re now SIX behind Harps and it seems like a three-way battle now for automatic promotion between Harps, UCD and Wexford.Wexford were trailing 2-1 at home to Cabinteely when two late, late goals earned them a massive three points which keeps them TWO points clear at the top.UCD host Athlone on Monday and they can close the gap to one point if they win and will leapfrog Harps in the process.It promises to be an exciting run-in as the race for the First Division title heats up.
