Koffee with Devgn-Kajol was more than just frivolous fun

first_imgBy Subhash K JhaKajol and Karan Johar are besties and Devgn wanted to be no part of his wife’s friends’circle. Kajol was fine with that. This was one of the ‘true confessions’ that emerged from the hour-long tete-a-tete with the couple in this week’s episode of Koffee With Karan..Kajol, God bless her ebullient soul, threatened to take over the conversation. But Devgn held his own. We now know for sure who wears the pants in the Devgn residence.Married for 19 years the couple demonstrated a certain casual comfort and lack of affectation in each other’s company where, as they said, couples don’t necessarily have to keep talking to one another to prove they are compatible.Lest we forget, Karan Johar’s talk show is about talking. And he spoke a lot, as usual. He apologised to Kajol for the very public fall-out that they had recently. I was wrong, he said. You were wrong, Kajol seemed to agree. While Kajol and Karan made amends, Devgn looked as though he couldn’t care less.I suppose the secret of their long-lasting togetherness was revealed on that couch with Karan Johar. Kajol talks. And Ajay Devgn DOESN’T listen. But the bantering apart, I could see a whole lot of mutual respect in this marriage in the way Devgn praised his wife for being a good daughter-in-law, in the bemused admiration he expressed while ostensibly teasing her about cheap shopping online, in the pride in his voice when he spoke about his two children, and in the sporting way he ribbed her about her obsession with selfies during her budhapa (old age).So are Karan Johar and Ajay Devgn friends finally? I don’t think so. They inhabit different world, and that’s what makes their marriage work. This doesn’t mean Devgn will keep that promise of coming to dinner at Karan’s place.Don’t raise your hopes too high, Karan. Ajay Devgn came on your show because his wife dragged him along. This is just not his scene.–IANSskj/vcadvertisementlast_img read more

Will surrender in court in next 34 days MLA Anant Singh

first_imgPatna: Bihar Independent MLA and strongman Anant Singh – allegedly evading arrest in connection with a case lodged under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) has said he will surrender in court in the next three-four days. In a video message, the Mokama MLA also asserted that he will interact with the journalists on his return. “I am not afraid of getting arrested. I have come to see my ailing friend and will surrender in the court in next three-four days. Also Read – Uddhav bats for ‘Sena CM’ “But first of all, I will go to my flat and interact with journalists,” the legislator said in the video clip sent to media houses on Sunday. Singh was booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) after a police team raided his ancestral house at Ladma village in Madhepura district and seized an AK-47 rifle, a magazine, live cartridges and two hand grenades on Friday. The Parliament has recently passed an amendment to the anti-terror law UAPA to give powers to the Centre to designate an individual as terrorist and seize his properties. Also Read – Farooq demands unconditional release of all detainees in J&K The accused legislator claimed that he had sought time with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar but failed to get an appointment. Contending that he did not visit his ancestral house in the past 14 years, Singh said, “Why would I keep weapons like AK-47 in a house which is shared by my enemy?” He, however, did not disclose who he was referring to as his enemy. Singh also questioned the police for allegedly not informing his family or journalists before conducting raids. A second raid was carried out at the official residence (1, Mall Road) of Anant Singh on Saturday for his arrest but the MLA was found to be absconding, Superintendent of Police (Rural), Patna, Kantesh Kumar Mishra said. His accomplice Chhotan Singh was, however, apprehended from the residence during the raid, he said. A sword and a mobile phone were also seized from the legislator’s official residence. Dismissing the MLAs allegations, the SP said the raid was carried out in the presence of a magistrate, as well as the caretaker of the house, in accordance with the law. The entire exercise has been recorded on video, the officer claimed. Mishra also said that a separate FIR was being lodged with Sachivalaya police station in Patna against the Independent MLA for giving shelter and protection to Chhotan Singh, an accused in connection with a criminal case lodged with Barh police station. Singh nicknamed “Chhote Sarkaar”- has a lengthy criminal record and was recently summoned to the police headquarters in Patna for giving his voice sample in connection with an attack on a Mokama-based contractor. He was formerly known to have shared a close relationship with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar but the two apparently fell out ahead of the 2015 assembly elections. Singh then left the JD(U) and contested and retained his seat as an Independent.last_img read more

Las Vegas hotels bet on technology to attract dazzle guests

first_imgLAS VEGAS, Nev. – It takes just minutes for a room service attendant to respond to a text message asking for a soda, bringing the Diet Coke on a tray with a glass of ice and lime wedges, no need for the modern hassle of placing a phone call.Thousands of guests at some of Las Vegas’ casino-hotels also can get towels, food and toiletries delivered with just a few taps on their smartphone. It comes as the staples of hotel room technology — a phone on a nightstand and a flat-screen TV — aren’t cutting it anymore in the hypercompetitive world of Sin City tourism.Guests can use tablets to control room features like lights and temperature. Shower infusers and special lights promise travellers a chance to recharge. And a 4-foot-tall (1-meter-tall) robot can point visitors to the nearest ATM. In the battle for millions of Las Vegas’ tourists, voice-assisted speakers and purification systems also are part of the push to attract ever-more-demanding customers and keep them coming back.“The hotel brands or the casino brands are trying to make themselves evolve to become more relevant to a younger audience that is highly technologically enabled,” said Robert Rippee, director of the Hospitality Lab at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.Las Vegas hotels are not the only ones using such technology. The Acme Hotel Co. in Chicago put an Amazon Echo in every room and the Waldorf Astoria in Beverly Hills, California, has equipped rooms with iPads. But what sets Sin City properties apart is the volume of guests they handle, which can test the technology that must be easy to understand.“Let’s say the tablet is a Microsoft Surface, but the tablet you use is an iPad, so you immediately have a gap,” Rippee said. “You, as the user, now have to learn to use a product an operating system you are unfamiliar with. If you are here for two nights, you are going to discard it.”Caesars Entertainment launched a texting service at its 3,976-room Caesars Palace casino-hotel on the Las Vegas Strip in August, months after rolling it out at two boutique hotels. Senior vice-president and chief experience officer Michael Marino said the service aims to improve guests’ stay after the company noticed a dip in phone calls.“It’s not like they have less needs, it’s just that something has happened over the last couple of years where people just don’t like to call people anymore,” Marino said.Four properties now have the service named Ivy, which the company credits for higher scores of two of its hotels on travel review website TripAdvisor. The service uses artificial intelligence to automatically answer common questions and requests, such as gym location and hours of operation. But trained staffers type back responses to more complex inquiries such as where Muslims should face to pray in the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca.“The window of your room faces to the East. If you pray facing the window, you will be oriented towards Mecca,” Ivy answered within two minutes. The Cosmopolitan casino-hotel also launched a chatbot a year ago, around the same time Wynn Resorts announced that an Amazon Echo would be installed in every room of the Wynn Las Vegas casino-hotel.At the Aria and Vdara hotels, each room is equipped with a tablet with applications that allow guests to schedule breakfast delivery, access thousands of publications and adjust temperature and lights. Travelers also can choose special rooms at the MGM Grand and The Mirage with several lighting options, including one that helps the body’s internal clock, and a device that infuses the shower’s water with vitamin C.Meanwhile, a shiny white, wide-eyed standing robot named Pepper in the lobby of the luxury Mandarin Oriental hotel can answer a set of preprogrammed questions, including checkout time, how to connect to the Wi-Fi network and the location of the spa.“I’ve seen robots on TV, but never in person. It’s so cute,” said Ana Rosa Santiago, a Miami resident who took a selfie with Pepper. “I already sent it to all my family.”___Follow Regina Garcia Cano on Twitter at https://twitter.com/reginagarciakNO .last_img read more

Metals miner Sherritt says it has developed oilsands partial upgrading technology

first_imgCALGARY – Toronto-based miner Sherritt International Corp. says it has developed a partial upgrading technology for the oilsands that could qualify for a $1-billion incentive program recently announced by the Alberta government.CEO David Pathe says the company has completed successful laboratory testing of the process at its facility in Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., and is now looking for an industry partner to help test it on a larger scale. The technology borrows from Sherritt’s research into the use of autoclaves, containers for chemical reactions using high pressure and temperatures, in metals processing.Pathe says the process involves stirring hydrogen into the bitumen under pressure at high temperature in the presence of a proprietary catalyst to create a lighter barrel of oil that will flow in a pipeline without being diluted.Diluent is expensive and takes away precious export pipeline space for Alberta’s growing production of bitumen. That’s why Alberta announced in February a $1-billion loan guarantee and grant program to begin next year through which it hopes to attract two to five partial bitumen upgrading facilities worth $5 billion in private investment.“One of the advantages of our (technology) is that it’s not like other partial upgrading where you leave behind large volumes of low-quality slag or coke,” said Pathe.“Instead of stripping out low-grade carbon, we’re adding hydrogen and actually maintaining the liquid volumes.”He says the resulting product will likely command a premium price because it will contain less sulphur and heavy metals. The company is active in several resource industries, primarily in Madagascar and in Cuba, where it has nickel and oil operations.Companies in this story: (TSX:S)last_img read more

Kinder Morgan Canada income falls despite rise in pipeline and terminals revenue

first_imgCALGARY — Kinder Morgan Canada Ltd. is reporting second-quarter income from continuing operations of $21.6 million, a decrease of $1.9 million from the second quarter of 2018.Earnings were boosted in the second quarter of 2018 by the gain on the sale of an Edmonton area pipeline segment, resulting in an apparent five per cent decline in the recent period.Excluding that gain, however, the segment was actually up 15 per cent, driven by storage capacity additions at its Edmonton terminal joint venture, the company said. Kinder Morgan says revenue rose in the three months ended June 30 to $104.9 million, up from $95.7 million in the same period of 2018, thanks to strong performance from its pipelines and terminals.Kinder Morgan Canada announced in May it had decided to remain a stand-alone public company after a strategic review of options that could have included the sale of part or all of the corporation. The company was spun off from its American parent, Kinder Morgan, Inc., in mid-2017 to raise money to build the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion but it sold the pipeline and its expansion project to the federal government for $4.5 billion last summer.last_img read more
