Lukaku double fires Man United to winning start

first_imgFormer Manchester City stalwart Zabaleta’s foul on Rashford gave United a free-kick on the left and from Mkhitaryan’s cross, Lukaku stole between Winston Reid and Arthur Masuaku to plant a header past Hart.Arnautovic served a reminder of West Ham’s threat with a header that De Gea was obliged to tip over, but it seemed only to redouble the home side’s determination to stretch their lead. After Rashford had left the right-hand upright shuddering with a curler from the left-hand apex of the area, Mkhitaryan released Martial to coolly tuck away United’s third before Pogba swept in the fourth from 20 yards.Collated English Premier League results on Sunday, the opening weekend of the 2017-18 season:Manchester United 4 (Lukaku 33, 53, Martial 87, Pogba 90) West Ham 0Newcastle 0 Tottenham 2 (Alli 61, Davies 70)Played SaturdayBrighton 0 Manchester City 2 (Aguero 70, Dunk 75-og)Chelsea 2 (Morata 69, Luiz 88) Burnley 3 (Vokes 24, 43, Ward 39)Crystal Palace 0 Huddersfield 3 (Ward 24-og, Mounie 26, 78)Everton 1 (Rooney 45+1) Stoke 0Southampton 0 Swansea 0Watford 3 (Okaka 8, Doucoure 32, Britos 90+3) Liverpool 3 (Mane 29, Firmino 55-pen, Salah 57)West Brom 1 (Hegazi 31) Bournemouth 0Played FridayArsenal 4 (Lacazette 2, Welbeck 45+2, Ramsey 83, Giroud 85) Leicester 3 (Okazaki 5, Vardy 29, 56) Share on: WhatsApp He might have been able to celebrate his first league goal even sooner.Mkhitaryan’s pass freed Juan Mata and when the Spaniard’s shot was blocked by West Ham goalkeeper Hart, he squared the ball to Lukaku, but the 24-year-old could not get a shot away.– Rashford hits post –Mata’s darting runs into the box were bringing United joy and he almost broke the deadlock when he raced onto Pogba’s clever dinked pass and slipped a shot past Hart, only for Angelo Ogbonna to hack clear.United’s pressure told in the 33rd minute thanks to a move started and finished by home debutants.Matic had already seduced the home fans with his awareness and coolness on the ball and he sprang a United counter-attack by racing out to block an attempted pass by Pedro Obiang.Picking up the loose ball, Rashford tore into the West Ham half and slid a pass into the box for Lukaku, whose first-time shot clanged off the left-hand post and nestled in the side-netting on the other side of the goal. While United old boy Hernandez endured a thankless first half on his return to Old Trafford, Andre Ayew threatened an equaliser in stoppage time with a rasping drive that David de Gea had to parry.Lukaku picked up where he had left off in the second half, first releasing Rashford to run through and shoot wide and then doubling his tally in the 52nd minute.center_img Manchester, United Kingdom | AFP | Romelu Lukaku introduced himself to Old Trafford in triumphant fashion with two goals as Manchester United crushed West Ham United 4-0 in an impressive Premier League opener on Sunday. The Belgium striker, a £75 million ($97.6 million, 82.5 million euros) signing from Everton, struck either side of half-time to take his tally of goals against West Ham to 11 in his last 11 appearances.Substitute Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba added late goals that gave a true reflection of United’s dominance and sent Jose Mourinho’s side to the top of the early-season standings on goal difference.United join Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur on maximum points and while West Ham offered scant resistance, the early signs suggest Mourinho’s men will not end the season 24 points off the pace again. While Lukaku took the headlines, Nemanja Matic also enjoyed an assured home debut following his £40 million switch from Chelsea and there were strong showings from Pogba, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Marcus Rashford as well.West Ham manager Slaven Bilic, who gave league debuts to Joe Hart, Pablo Zabaleta, Marko Arnautovic and Javier Hernandez, will hope for better when his side visit Southampton next weekend.Having opened his account in Tuesday’s UEFA Super Cup loss to Real Madrid in Macedonia, Lukaku now has three goals in two United games.last_img read more

MAN PUNCHED PRIEST DURING MASS, COURT TOLD

first_imgA man punched a priest during Mass after the cleric refused to accept a donation from him, a court heard today.Seamus Doherty, 66, arrived at St Colmcille’s in Glendowan, Churchill before 8pm Mass was due to start on January 15th, 2011.He went into the sacristy of the church and offered Fr Michael McKeever a donation of cash. The priest refused and went on to start Mass, the court heard. However when he started Mass, Doherty, of The Rock, Churchill, began to interrupt the ceremony. He began shouting and roaring abuse and standing in the middle aisle of the church.Fr McKeever asked Doherty to stop but he refused. At one stage he pulled a bottle of alcohol from his pocket. The priest asked Doherty to go to the back of the church but the accused began swearing at Fr McKeever and said he was not leaving. He then began to shout allegations that the clergy were responsible for the suicide of a young local man whose family was present at the Mass, the court was told.Fr McKeever, assisted by members of the congregation, eventually went down to Doherty and asked him to leave. However the accused became more aggressive and eventually punched the priest in the forehead before leaving.Defence solicitor Frank Dorrian told Letterkenny District Court his client had a problem with alcohol and also had mental health problems.“His behaviour is completely irrational because he has no issue with the clergy or the Gardai.“He has a long history but he says that by hitting a priest he has now hit rock bottom,” he said.Judge Paul Kelly said Doherty was obviously a serious risk to himself and to the community when he “loses the run of himself.”“I can think of little worse than a family hearing things like this in a church.“I have heard this man has problems. It may well be better that he is taken off the streets to address these,” he said.Judge Kelly adjourned the case until March 15th for a probation report. At hearing.© 2011 donegaldaily.com, all Rights ReservedThe copying, republication or redistribution of donegaldaily.com Content, including by framing or similar means, is expressly prohibited by law.Follow us on www.twitter.com/donegaldailyFollow us on www.facebook.com/donegaldailySell anything on www.donegaldailyclassifieds.comMAN PUNCHED PRIEST DURING MASS, COURT TOLD was last modified: January 19th, 2012 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:Churchillcourt caselast_img read more

Donegal’s Mompreneurs are just the business!

first_imgThe term ‘working mother’ has taken on a whole new lease of life with the phenomenal rise in ‘Mompreneurs’ starting businesses from their kitchen tables and Donegal mammies have been leading the way with some fantastic enterprises springing up in recent times.Twin sisters Charlene McCarron and her sister Ciara Mhic Cathmhaoil decided upon Bibby Love, their Buncrana-based bib-making business when they couldn’t find a bib that suited the needs of their babies, but the primary school teachers admitted they really just started out with a dream and a sewing machine.Interestingly, in a county once famous for its textiles industry, clothing cottage-industries are proving to be very popular with working mums. Bibby Love owners Charlene McCarron and Ciara Mhic Cathmhaoil.Chiq Maternity (St. Johnston) and Pretty Baby Hair Accessories (Manorcunningham) are just two of many others now in the county and all three mompreneurs, along with many others, will attend this Sunday’s Bump and Beyond baby event in Letterkenny’s Mount Errigal Hotel.Maria Rushe, from Newtowncunningham, a teacher and mother of two – who organised that event when she discovered that mothers were struggling to find information on a whole range of parenting topics – said there really is a growing trend of mothers taking action when they spot a gap in the market.Amanda McClintock and Gillian Hamilton – Chiq Maternity. Two of those mothers are Amanda McClintock and Gillian Hamilton who started Chiq Maternity earlier this year after doing a Start Your Own Business Course with Donegal Local Enterprise Office.“Our children are all of the same ages and our youngest both started school together and we found we had some spare time and thought we could put it to good use. We decided to open an online shop for maternity wear as we had huge problems ourselves sourcing special occasion wear when we where both pregnant. We talked to a lot of other mothers who said exactly the same thing.” For now Amanda and Gillian are sourcing labels from Paris that are unique to Ireland for their online business, but the plans are to get some of their own designs and products on sale further down the line. That’s something that both Bibby Love and Pretty Baby Hair Accessories are already doing with Pretty Baby Hair Accessories now selling to over 50 countries.Leona Barron with her son Michael and her daughter Grace.Former economics and business studies teacher Leona Barron who started Pretty Baby Hair Accessories, explained that she had also created something to fill a need before realising it had business potential.“When Grace (who is now aged 6) was born, she had a beautiful full head of black hair and I was looking for clips to keep the hair from her eyes. The only ones I could find in stores were metal ones that were too harsh to put on a newborn’s head, so initially all I did was wrap the clips in some pretty ribbon to soften them against her head.People started asking me then where I got them. I started making some for friends and family members.” At that point it was very much a hobby, but it grew quickly and Leona left her full-time job to concentrate on her own business.Since October 2013 Leona has watched the orders increase hugely on her website www.prettybabyhair.co.uk. To date the business has shipped thousands of orders to customers in over 50 countries around the world. And with this extraordinary growth of Pretty Baby Hair Accessories, new plans are already in place for the business.Bibby Love operate from Derry as well as Buncrana, and while the business is only eight months old, their tale bears striking similarities to Leona’s.“The inspiration really came from our children and not being able to find products on the market to suit our needs. Charlene had begun taking a sewing class as a hobby to be able to make decorative things for around the house and to make pretty things for the girls. Ciara had just had her second baby and suggested that they look into making bibs that were more absorbent than any we had as she was struggling to keep the baby dry during feeding. It was then that we discovered the wonder fabric that is bamboo cotton and all the amazing properties it has for babies and mammies, both practical and beneficial. We began with the intention of making them only for ourselves and as gifts for friends, but after using them we decided that other mammies could benefit from our products too.”Having watched her business bloom, successful Mompreneur Leona says that she would encourage other mothers to seize the day and go for it.“I knew nothing about any of this, but I saw a niche in the market and after doing some research I went for it. I didn’t have a huge outlay but I did work hard and was determined to make it succeed if I could. There are thousands of women around the world who are at home developing their own business ideas in between changing nappies and doing the school run. I would encourage anyone with a good idea and something to sell, to seize the opportunity. Who knows where it might lead them!”Donegal’s Mompreneurs are just the business! was last modified: October 26th, 2016 by Rachel McLaughlinShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img read more

More Excuses for Missing Dark Matter

first_img(Visited 523 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0 How long can a theory survive repeated falsifications? Very long, when ideology (and funding) is at stake.CEH has been reporting on dark matter for many years. They still haven’t found the magic elixir that keeps the big bang theory alive, after a lot of money has been spent on sensitive underground detectors.ATLAS experiment sets strong constraints on supersymmetric dark matter (Phys.org). Chalk up another failure at detection. Another candidate particle has been ruled out.Dark matter is an unknown type of matter present in the universe that could be of particle origin. One of the most complete theoretical frameworks that includes a dark matter candidate is supersymmetry. Many supersymmetric models predict the existence of a new stable, invisible particle called the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP), which has the right properties to be a dark matter particle.Notice the curious line that dark matter is an “unknown type of matter” that is “present” in the universe. If it is unknown, how do they know it is present? The only reason is that the most popular version of the big bang theory needs it.  Two search methods failed to find LSP’s. In physicist lingo, the results “place strong constraints” on the existence of the theoretical particles.Axions may or may not exist – but we’re not just making things up (New Scientist). Sometimes it’s better not to state that you’re “not just making things up,” because the statement itself arouses suspicions. Chanda Prescod-Weinstein, a theoretical physicist and astronomer, proceeds anyway with that lead-in.RECENTLY, I visited a prestigious physics department and gave a presentation about my research on a particle called the axion. Fifteen minutes in, a member of the department interrupted me to insist, “Isn’t the axion just a matter of speculation? Shouldn’t you say that?” I had been warned by the graduate students to beware this particular professor, who has a habit of rudely interrupting talks to ask female speakers unnecessary questions. “Yes,” I responded. “I have no idea if the axion is real. Everything theoretical physicists do is speculative, and likely wrong, except for the things we get right.”Artist conception of dark matter expanding in a field of dark energy.Axions are a different candidate than LSP’s for dark matter. Have they been detected? Of course not. But the prof is comfortable with that. Implying her male colleague is sexist, she admits that she can’t run an experiment to repeat the first 1 second of the universe, but that doesn’t faze her. She rather enjoys it, prancing merrily into the unknown:Much like detectives in a mystery novel, we develop ideas about what happened, and then we refine or radically alter those ideas, based on new evidence. Then, we try to convince ourselves and each other that our ideas are good, realistic models of the universe. There is much we don’t know. The universe certainly doesn’t care if we figure it out. At the same time, it is a great pleasure to do the work of pairing speculative imagination with hard-won data to get to know the universe in this way. I came to study the axion not for its role in the dipole problem, but because it may also be a good candidate to solve a problem of missing, transparent matter – what has historically been called the “dark matter problem“. Axions still might not exist. But their demise would raise so many questions that it is hard to feel worried about that possibility. I say, bring it on.Dreams and myths also raise questions about other dreams and myths. Does that make dreams a scientific enterprise? Should taxpayers fork out their money for this kind of fruitless quest? What a fun job: testing your imagination against evidence that never shows up. The department colleague she calls “Dr Sceptic” asked the most scientific question. “Isn’t the axion just a matter of speculation? Shouldn’t you say that?”A New Filter to Better Map the Dark Universe (Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory). How can you map something not known to exist? Suppose your theory states that green areas seen from satellites are evidence of gnomes living in the forest. Eggheads at Berkeley are spending a lot of money and erudition on a problem like that. Radiation bathing the universe is well established. That’s like the forest. But dark matter and dark energy are like the hidden gnomes causing the patterns observed.Distortions in the cosmic microwave background (CMB), caused by a phenomenon known as lensing, can further illuminate the structure of the universe and can even tell us things about the mysterious, unseen universe – including dark energy, which makes up about 68 percent of the universe and accounts for its accelerating expansion, and dark matter, which accounts for about 27 percent of the universe.Photograph of dark matter. White background provided for contrast. As often claimed, this leaves only 5% of the universe to consist of things we can actually observe. The dark, mysterious unknown stuff must be there. Theory demands that gnomes outnumber trees by 20 to 1.They partially justify the work on the basis that it helps answer other questions, too. “One possible application is to develop more detailed visualizations of dark matter filaments and nodes that appear to connect matter in the universe via a complex and changing cosmic web.” The results based on observation may have merit. But in a moment of candor, team member Emmanual Schan made perhaps the most astute observation: “You can be wrong and not know it.”The dark matter industry sure keeps a lot of bright people busy looking at nothing. If it turns out to be a scam, the Biblical description of these people will be fitting: “And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.” (John 3:19)last_img read more

Be Your Own Tyrant

first_img Get the Free eBook! Learn how to sell without a sales manager. Download my free eBook! You need to make sales. You need help now. We’ve got you covered. This eBook will help you Seize Your Sales Destiny, with or without a manager. Download Now Tyranny: the word means a cruel and oppressive ruler.Liberty: defined as freedom from oppressive rule.If you want liberty, you need to rule yourself like a tyrant. If you can’t govern your desires like a tyrant, then you will undoubtedly find a real form (or forms) of tyranny.Freedom Now is Tyranny LaterMaybe you can’t discipline yourself to get out of the bed in the morning. Instead, you hit the snooze button when the alarm clock rings at 6:30 AM, capturing nine more minutes of comfort and sleep. It feels good, so you hit snooze again, and one more time for good measure. Your decision to seek comfort results in you having no time for an effective morning ritual, and no time to do anything before running out the door.  You have the liberty to sleep in should you want to, but it will likely result in the tyranny of low energy, poor clarity, mediocre work, complacency, and unfilled hopes, dreams, and wishes. How you do one thing is how you do everything. You can exercise your freedom to avoid anything that looks like exercise, taking poor care of your health and well-being. You can make poor dietary choices, and practice poor hydration habits and sleep rituals. It is possible to exercise your freedom in ways that make the poor decisions above seem acceptable by comparison. Your freedom to do what you want when it comes to your health is yours alone. The tyranny of sickness, illness, and poor health are the natural outcomes of the exercise of those freedoms. You can spend more money than you have to spend. Some companies count on you borrowing money from them to buy things you believe that you need to be happy. These companies want you to have the freedom to have what you want when you want it, avoiding having to go without or waiting. The Joneses have a new neighbor. You have the freedom to enter into contracts to borrow money from companies that provide you with credit, and you are free to borrow as much as they will lend you. Tyranny is paying interest on loans to buy things that no longer mean anything, if they ever did.The decision to have a pessimistic, skeptical, cynical attitude is available to you. And why wouldn’t it be when media designs every story to frighten you about something that isn’t likely to ever harm you, separate you from people who are different from you or sensationalize stories to make them ever more salacious? The exercise of the freedom to choose what you believe about the world and its inhabitants belongs to you. It’s your birthright. But the tyranny of cynicism will make your life far less than it would be had you decided differently. If you really don’t like to exert yourself at work, preferring instead to try to do as little as possible, staying under the radar and out of harm’s way, you have that freedom (while it lasts, anyway). You can allow your cynicism to creep over into your work, never giving yourself over to the work. You can look for new work, but when you show up to your new job, the same cynic in you will not have changed one iota, and you will be back to believing your unhappiness is caused by external forces. The lack of effort and the unwillingness to do good work will bring the tyranny of an inadequate income, a lack of advancement, a lack of purpose and meaning, and anxiety about a future where things are even worse than they are now.To Be Free, Be the TyrantThe personal freedom you want is found in being your own personal tyrant. The tyrant sets the alarm earlier than you find acceptable and doesn’t allow you to hit the snooze button. In doing so, you have the freedom to do all the things that lead to a successful day (successful days lead to successful weeks which lead to successful months and successful years). When you are a tyrant about your health and well-being, you have the freedom of abundant energy, stamina, clarity, flexibility, and mobility. You are less often ill, and you push the unavoidable health problems far into the future. The financial tyrant takes your money from you before you see it and transfers it to some vehicle that allows it to grow. This decision, even though it requires you to go without now, ensures you have better freedoms in the future. You need to be a tyrant when it comes to the things you allow to infect your mind, things like scarcity, envy, and judging others. This tyranny provides the freedom to choose a better, more empowering set of beliefs.Quality work is the product of the tyrant. The tyrant eliminates distractions. It provides a laser-focus on the outcome you are pursuing. The tyranny of good work offers the freedom to be more, do more, and have more, while also contributing more—and making a difference for more people. If you want freedom, you need to be your own personal tyrant. If not, a different—and much more harmful—form of tyranny will be yours.last_img read more
